Day 4: “Tacos, a College Student’s idea of American Food”

This morning, after waking up and getting ready for the day we went up to class and had a brief history lesson about how South Africa has gotten to where it is today, well not yet but we’re working on it. We went back to the township today to make dinner for our families and play with the kids for the last time for a little while.

My group and I decided that for our dish, we were going to make tacos. We weren’t the only ones who though that Tex-Mex still technically counted as American, because I think about 3 or 4 other groups made tacos too. After tripping the breaker in our house 3 or 4 times and had to go buy more electricity for the house, the meal was finally made. Hetta sat down and talked with us while the kids played and took pictures with our cameras. She explained to us that it’s hard for her and the other parents in the township to let the children play with us right now because it has been rainy and cold. When kids down here get sick, it’s not like when kids in America get sick, it could almost be life-threatening for them. She also kept apologizing to us because the floor was wet, and her plans for putting bricks in the driveway to keep the water and dirt out and keep the floors dry.

Our hearty, American meal consisting of tacos, refried beans, rice, pizza and rice crispies was a hit. We also witnessed a fire in out yard after our parents made a fire and caught the bottle of glue on fire. We took more pictures and played with our kids more and then they started asking us if we were spending the night and if we were going to be coming back tomorrow- bad thing is, they’ll be having another group of people going to be with them starting Monday, they have a pretty tough act to follow. Saying goodbye to Hetta today was hard, we connected for the first time since Monday. We found out today that she is only 45, but with the cruel conditions that living in the Sir Lowry Pass township, it can cause you to age pretty quickly.

Tomorrow, we are going up to the wine lands and see baby cheetas, it ought to be an interesting weekend.

Travel on,

Seth
